Women’s Soccer Battles Hard in Tough 2-1 Loss to PSU Beaver

MONT ALTO, Pa. – The Penn State Mont Alto women's soccer team nearly completed the second half comeback attempt, however PSU Beaver goalkeeper Brittany Zahn held her line to save an 86th minute penalty kick attempt by Karina Padilla (Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville). The Mont Alto (0-3, 0-1 PSUAC) scoring opportunity proved to be the final for either team as Beaver held on for the 2-1 win to improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference action.

Inside the Box Score

  • Mont Alto outshot the visitors by a 12-5 margin. Karina Padilla (Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) led the team with four shots including two that were on target.
  • Goalkeeper Angel Schoonover (Woodhull, N.Y. / Jasper-Troupsburg) improved as the match went on tallying a save in the 11th minute.
  • Beaver placed three of its five shots on target with Abbie Miller and Marissa King tallying goals.

How it Happened

  • The teams traded possession in the opening minutes of the match, but Beaver began to hold the ball in Mont Alto's offensive third. The visitors punished Mont Alto in the 8th minute when Marissa King connected on a dipping shot from just outside the 18-yard box that put Beaver up 1-0.
  • Padilla nearly tallied the equalizer in the 34th minute for Mont Alto, but her shot hit the outside left post and Beaver went into the halftime with the 1-0 lead.
  • PSU Mont Alto came out of the break rejuvenated with two early shots, but Beaver made the most of the next dangerous scoring opportunity in the 63rd minute. Abbie Miller struck the ball past Schoonover from just inside the box to put her team up 2-0.
  • Mont Alto earned a goal at the 84:54 mark when Jesime Freet (Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle) capitalized on the multiple person counter attack and slipped her shot past the Beaver keeper.

Penn State Mont Alto returns to action on Saturday, September 22 in another PSUAC matchup. The Lions will square off against PSU Schuylkill at 3 p.m.
