MONT ALTO, Pa. – The Penn State Mont Alto women's soccer team pieced together a complete team effort on Saturday with a convincing 4-0 victory over Penn State Schuylkill.

The Lions (1-3, 1-1 PSUAC) picked up their first victory of the season and first win for head coach Mary Miller, while also picking up their first shutout since October 6, 2016.

Karina Padilla (Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville), Shania Atherton (Saint Thomas, Pa. / James Buchanan) and Maddie Shirley (Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) each netted a goal for Mont Alto as they also scored on a Schuylkill own goal. The victory was the Lions first conference win of the season for PSUMA. Goalkeeper Angel Schoonover (Woodhull, N. Y.  / Jasper-Troupsburg) earned her first collegiate shutout finishing with a pair of saves.

The Penn State Schuylkill own goal got the scoring started in the 49th minute, but Mont Alto certainly had its chances within the first half tallying 15 shots. The chances included a penalty kick that was pushed just left of the post by Maddie Shirley (Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) in the 40th minute. The Lions forced PSU Schuylkill goalkeeper Danielle Lilly to make 11 first half saves.

After breaking the scoreless tie in the 49th minute, Mont Alto continued to dominate the possession and added to its lead in the 61st minute when Karina Padilla (Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) slotted the ball past the keeper after being sprung on a through ball by Kara Newell (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg). Shania Atherton (Saint Thomas, Pa. / James Buchanan) scored her first collegiate goal minutes later when she connected with the back of the net on a Jesime Freet (Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle) cross.

Maddie Shirley (Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) found the back of the net to complete the goal scoring during the 88th minute as Newell finished the match with a pair of assists.

Mont Alto outshot Schuylkill 26-6, including a 15-1 advantage during the first 45 minutes. The team also attempted 10 corner kicks.

The Lions return to action on Sunday, September 30th in a road match against Penn State Brandywine. The PSUAC contest is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
